Safer Snickets

In January 2023 we began community engagement with teenage girls from Hollings Youth Association in Manningham, Bradford to identify and develop ideas to reimagine an unloved but well used snicket and make it feel safer. Following a series of design workshops and community clean up activities we installed a number of temporary interventions including a colourful hop-scotch and footprint trail and a canopy of flying birds along the snicket. We evaluated the interventions with the young people and explored longer term opportunities for creating lasting change in the snicket to reduce levels of fly-tipping and sense of safety.

As part of a second stage of this project we also commissioned a local illustrator to develop a handout resource for local community groups to explore the potential to create their own version of Safer Snicket projects.

This project was funded by JU:MP a Sport England local delivery pilot in Bradford.

“What a fabulous achievement - active snickets in the heart of Manningham. Very well done to everyone involved with this amazing project!”
