Our process

Discover & Prioritise

We listen widely, find the outliers and disruptors. We go far beyond traditional forms of 'consultation' and meet people where they are. We do meaningful (and messy) collaboration to co-create a vision for change. We mediate between 'us' and 'them' and truly understand the dynamics of power and fear at play when communities or places change. We find ways to share our power through the recruitment of paid local producers who are part of existing networks and join our team for the duration of our place based work.

Co-design & Test

We connect people together and try stuff out, to see if it works. We support residents and civil society to shape local streets and spaces to create thriving, healthy, strong communities. We understand the power of networks and how to unleash and support them to thrive at all levels.

Monitoring & Impact

We search for data and evidence bases to test and validate our assumptions. We co-create project-specific indicators with all our stakeholders and share our results. We measure what matters to people and empower community members to define their own theory of change.

Tools & Resources

The Street Space toolkit comprises resources we have created to guide our practice and shape our projects. Each tool supports us on different scales, through different means, during different moments of a project. This document provides a working overview of the growing toolkit to see the resources we have developed and understand how they work together to support us. The toolkit comprises of our North Star, Map for Map Makers and Methods Cards. Do explore and download the PDF’s below or get in touch for more details.

Street Space North Star

The Street Space North Star outlines our manifesto, our reason for being and doing! This enables us to understand and communicate our long term goals and an overview of how we intend to achieve them. It keeps us grounded! It reminds us of our purpose.

Street Space Map for Map Makers

The Street Space Map for Map Makers is a resource we use to collaborate, conceive of and create community centred projects. The map guides us through a series of questions to help us unveil the heart of a project, consider what’s important to us, the client and the community and create a project that responds to the unique situation of a particular community.

Street Space Method Cards: Means, Methods & Meanings

The Street Space Method Cards present the methods that are central to our practice. Each of the cards describes one method and includes a brief description of why it is important for us. These cards are linked to a series of templates, guidance and policies that outline our approach to both planning and doing our engagement and collaborative design in an ethically sound and honest way.
