Greening the Fiddlers

Greening the Fiddlers is a community-led project in Dagenham aiming to make the area safer, greener and a more welcoming place for everyone to enjoy. A Mayor of London funded Low Emission Neighbourhood, Street Space worked in partnership with Be First, Sustrans and Living Streets to develop detailed concept designs for a new public space in an unused space in the middle of a car park.

Involving over 500 local people in the collaborative design process so far through pop ups, design workshops, large scale events and walking audits we were able to understand the potential of a new public space through working closely with businesses along the shopping parade. We also worked closely with over 100 school children in the area and their families to test a range of creative ideas for programming the space.

“This is an exceptional community led project working with residents to improve the Whalebone Lane South area.”

— Councillor Achilleos, London Borough of Barking and Dagenham
